Stout Undergoes Wrist Surgery, Out Two Months
University of Northern Iowa rising senior forward Grant Stout (New Sharon, Iowa) underwent successful wrist surgery yesterday at the Mayo Clinic, and is expected to be back to full activity in two months.

Bradley's Patrick O'Bryant Drafted Ninth Overall
As it turns out, Bradley's final game in the 2006 NCAA Tournament was not Patrick O'Bryant's final game at the Oakland Arena. The Golden State Warriors selected Bradley's 7-foot sophomore center with the ninth overall pick in the 2006 NBA Draft Wednesday night at Madison Square Garden.

Father-Son Duo to Lead Drake Men's Basketball
Tom Davis will continue to lead the Drake University men's basketball program until he decides to retire, at which point his son, Keno Davis, will take the reins of the program, Drake President David Maxwell has announced. When the senior Davis retires, Keno Davis will be given a contract as head coach through the 2010-2011 season, ensuring a seamless transition for the program. The junior Davis joined his father on the bench when Tom Davis was named the school's 23rd head coach in 2003.

Nate Funk Granted Medical Hardship Waiver
Creighton basketball guard Nate Funk, the 2004-05 runner-up for Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Year, will return to the floor in 2006-07 with the Bluejays. Earlier this week the MVC office granted Funk a medical hardship waiver for his injury-shortened 2005-06 season. He will have one year of eligibility remaining.

Two Valley Men's Basketball Teams Ranked in Final Top-25 Poll
The national ranking is the first at any point of a season for Bradley since the final poll of the 1987-88 season when the Braves finished No. 11 in the AP poll and No. 12 in what was then the UPI Coaches Poll. The 2005-06 season now is the 14th in which Bradley has been ranked in the final poll of the year.

Two Former Valley Players Taken in First Round
The United States Basketball League (USBL) held its 21st annual college draft selection on Tuesday, April 11, and two former Valley players were taken in the first round, including the 2006 Larry Bird MVC Player of the Year, Paul Miller of Wichita State. The Kansas Cagerz selected Wichita State?s Paul Miller with the 5th pick. The 6-10 forward recently helped the Shockers to a Sweet 16 appearance in the NCAA Tournament.

Missouri State Sets Standard in NCAA FT Accuracy
Blake Ahearn of the Missouri State men?s basketball team and the Missouri State Lady Bears reached into new areas of free throw shooting excellence with their NCAA Division I leadership at the foul line for the 2005-06 season. Ahearn became the first player in the 57-year history of NCAA Statistics to lead Division I in free throw accuracy three years in a row.

MBB: Valley is National Conference of the Year
Collegehoops.net, the web's most popular independent college basketball site, has announced the remainder of its 2006 postseason awards, and the Missouri Valley Conference has been tabbed "National Conference of the Year." Ben Howland, coach of national runner-up UCLA was named the 2006 Collegehoops.net Coach of the Year. Fellow Final Four participant George Mason was named the 2006 Collegehoops.net Program of the Year for their impressive run through the NCAA Tournament.

Valley men's teams went 2-0 in postseason play on Thursday as No. 7 Wichita State picked up its first NCAA win since 1981 as the Shockers beat No. 10 Seton Hall 86-66. Creighton also won at home against Akron in the NIT, 71-60.

Six Teams to Play in Post Season
March 12 was an historic day in the Missouri Valley Conference. For the first time in the league's 99-year history, four teams have been selected to participate in the NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Championship, as Bradley, UNI and regular-season champ Wichita State joined automatic qualifer Southern Illinois in the 2006 NCAA Tournament field. The brackets were also announced for the 40-team NIT field, and Creighton and Missouri State will represent the Valley in the NIT -- giving The Valley six post-season teams in the same year for the first time in league history.

2006 State Farm MVC Men's Basketball Championship
In the championship game of the 2006 State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Men's Basketball Tournament, No. 2 Southern Illinois (22-10) defeated No. 5 Bradley (20-10) 59-46 behind another strong performance from Randal Falker. The sophomore finished with 17 points and 16 rebounds on his way to being named the tournament's Most Outstanding Player. This is Southern Illinois' fourth tournament title overall, its first since 1995.

Wichita State's Miller, Turgeon Named Player, Coach of the Year
After helping Wichita State win its first regular-season title in 23 years, Paul Miller has been named the Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Year by a vote of league coaches, media and sports information directors. Miller is the first Shocker since 1985 to earn Valley Player of the Year plaudits (Xavier McDaniel). In fact, he's only the third Wichita State player to earn the award (Antoine Carr, 1983, and McDaniel in 1984 and 1985) since the MVC began selecting a Player of the Year in 1969.

Senior Neil Plank of Illinois State highlights a list of 17 student-athletes honored as part of the 2006 MVC Scholar-Athlete Teams, announced today by the league office. For the third-straight season, Plank has earned selection to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America? University Division Men?s Basketball Team. Plank, who carries a 3.93 cumulative grade point average in finance, is one of three Valley representatives (Jamaal Tatum and Anthony Tolliver) on an all-district team.

With seven days (and two games for each team) left in the regular-season race, as many as five Valley teams can still earn at least a share of the regular-season title. One of those teams is UNI, which climbed into the Top 25 for the third week this season (at No. 25 in the Associated Press poll of Feb. 20). Wichita State is the current leader in the Valley standings, though, and the Shockers are seeking their first regular-season crown since taking the title in 1983.

Panthers Stay in Top 25 Men's Basketball Rankings
For the second-straight week, UNI (20-4) is in the Top 25. The Panthers are No. 25 in this week's Associated Press poll, but did fall out of the ESPN/USA Today Coaches poll after clocking in at No. 24 last week. The Panthers face Wichita State (19-5) in a battle for first place on Tuesday at the UNI-Dome. That game can be heard on Sirius Satellite Radio on Channel 181 (7:05 p.m. CST).

UNI picked up its 20th win of the season on Feb. 4, while Wichita State grabbed victory No. 19 the same day. The league has had a minimum of two 20-game winners in each of the past seven seasons. In 2004-05, the league had four twenty-game winners (Southern Illinois, Creighton, UNI, Wichita State), tying an all-time record for 20-game winners. Wichita State goes for No. 20 at UNI on Tuesday in a battle between first-place teams.

In men's basketball, UNI is No. 24 in the ESPN/USA Today Coaches poll, and UNI is ranked No. 25 in the Associated Press. A Valley team has been ranked in each of the past three seasons. Although not in the Associated Press poll last year, Southern Illinois was No. 25 in the USA Today/ESPN coaches poll of Feb. 28. SIU (six weeks) and Creighton (one week) were both ranked in the AP in 2003-04, while Creighton spent 15 weeks in the AP top-25 poll in 2003. UNI had never been ranked until cracking the top-25 polls this week.

Sunday (Jan. 22) marked the half-way point of the 2005-06 men's basketball conference season. For the first time since 1999, four teams share the lead at the midway point as Creighton, UNI, Southern Illinois and Wichita State share identical 7-2 league records. This marks the first time since UNI joined the league in 1992 that the Panthers have been in first place at the turn.

Southern Illinois is 6-0, marking the fourth-straight season the Salukis have been perfect after five league games. SIU was 6-0, 17-0, and 5-0 before losing a league game the past three seasons. At least one team has started the league season 3-0 or better for 16-straight years. The last time a league season did not have a 3-0 team was the 1989-90 season, when Illinois State and Tulsa both started 2-0 before losing. SIU's current 11-game winning streak is fifth-best in the nation. Valley games tonight feature SIU at UNI (Sirius Satellite Radio); and Evansville at Illinois State (FSN Midwest).

With an RPI rating of (.5707), The Valley trails only the Big Ten (.5937) and the Big East (.5709). The ACC (.5680), Big 12 (.5537) and SEC (.5478) follow. Indiana State (4), Missouri State (22), UNI (25), and Creighton (44) represent Valley schools in the Top 50. The Valley and the SEC are the only two conferences in the nation that have all of their members with better than .500 records (thru Dec. 18).

In men's basketball, The Valley is off to one of its best starts in league history, recording a 36-11 non-conference record in the first three weeks. Including in that record is a 3-5 mark against BCS leagues thus far this year, which includes a one-point loss to nationally ranked Illinois (by Wichita State) and a three-point loss to nationally ranked Boston College (by Drake). The Valley has two games against the Big XII and three against Big Ten members this week.

Jacobson Leads NIT All-Stars to 7-0 Record
The University of Northern Iowa senior guard Ben Jacobson led all point scorers in the 2005 NIT All-Star tour. The Sioux City, Iowa, native averaged 16.7 points and 2.3 rebounds per game in the seven-game trip abroad.
