Driver's Seat
Wichita State can clinch at least a share of the league's title with a win Wednesday. The Shockers have a two-game lead in the standings with three games to go, and WSU holds the non-conference schedule-strength tiebreaker against Creighton. Both have one non-MVC game remaining.
Player of the Week
Joe Ragland, Wichita State, Sr., 6-0, Gd., West Springfield (Mass.) High, North Platte (Neb.) C.C.
Ragland averaged 21.5 points and 4.5 assists while shooting 76.2 percent (16-21) in WSU's two wins last week against UNI and No. 15 Creighton. Against Creighton, he scored 24 points on 9-of-12 shooting from the field, which included a 2-of-4 effort from the arc. He also had six assists and a block. In the UNI game, he scored 19 points on 78 percent (7-9) shooting, which included five three pointers. The Shockers subsequently earned their first Top-25 ranking since Dec. 2006, clocking in at No. 24 this week.

Seth Tuttle, UNI, Fr., 6-8, Fwd., Sheffield (Iowa)West Fork High
Tuttle averaged 16.0 ppg, 7.0 rpg and shot 64.7 percent from the field in contests vs. Wichita State and Illinois State. Tuttle scored 15 points on 5-of-7 shooting against the Shockers. He made 5-of-7 free throws vs. the Shockers. Tuttle followed that up with his third career double-double with 17 points and 11 rebounds in a 78-63 win over Illinois State. Tuttle made 6-of-10 shots from the field and was 4-of-5 at the foul line. He also handed out three assists vs. the Redbirds. Tuttle leads the MVC in field goal percentage (.657).
ISU Sets NCAA Records
Indiana State set two NCAA records in its win against Southern Illinois on Saturday, Feb. 11, by making 12-of-12 three-point field goals. The 12-of-12 mark tops Ohio State's 14-of-15 performance (93.3 percent) on March 6, 2011, vs. Wisconsin. The 12-straight treys is also a record, beating the previous NCAA mark of 11-straight makes. The perfect shooting effort was the best in the league from three-point range since Evansville made 8-of-10 treys against Middle Tennessee on Dec. 18, 2010.
Perfect, Part II
Wichita State went a perfect 17-of-17 at the free throw line in its win at Creighton on Saturday. The Shockers are the first league team to go perfect from the line (with more than 10 attempts) since UNI was a perfect 16-of-16 against Evansville on Jan. 1, 2010. The last to go perfect with more makes than WSU's 17 on Saturday (Feb. 11) was Illinois State when the Redbirds made 19-of-19 in a game at Southern Illinois on Feb. 4, 2009.
Road Warriors
Wichita State is 8-1 on the road this season. Joined by Creighton (8-3 on the road) and Missouri State (8-4 on the road), the MVC is only one of two leagues (the other is the MAAC) to have three teams with eight+ road wins this year.
Shox at No. 24
Ranked No. 24 in this week's Associated Press poll, Wichita State is back in the AP Top 25 poll for the first time since Dec. 26, 2006 (16th in the AP after a season-high of No. 8 that year). WSU climbed to No. 8 in the Dec. 11, 2006, poll on the strength of road wins at George Mason, No. 6 LSU and No. 15 Syracuse. Creighton had been ranked in the USA Today/ESPN Coaches poll for 12-straight weeks, reaching a season-best No. 12 (Jan. 30) before dropping to No. 28 in both polls this week.
Spreading the Wealth
Since the 1995-96 season, every MVC member has won the regular-season title, and every member has qualified for the NCAA Tournament. No other conference in the nation has had every member accomplish both feats in that span.
Crowd Control
In terms of attendance, Creighton's season average to 16,692. That figure ranks eighth-best nationally, and is on pace to shatter a Missouri Valley Conference record of 15,930 it set in 2008-09.
20 Boards for Jackie
Jackie Carmichael's career-best 20 rebounds against Drake last week equaled the most rebounds by a Redbird in the history of Redbird Arena. Carmichael's effort matched Anthony Slack's 20-rebound effort against Creighton on Feb. 27, 2008. Prior to Slack, Illinois State had not had an individual 20-rebound performance since Del Yarbrough grabbed 20 caroms against Northern Illinois, Dec. 22, 1978.
NCAA Stat Leaders
Creighton's Doug McDermott ranks third nationally at 22.9 points per game, while Colt Ryan of Evansville is No. 13 nationally with his 20.0 average. The MVC has not had a player average more than 20 points per game since 2001 (Illinois State's Tarise Bryson, 22.8).
Weems Reaches 1,800
The MVC has had 26 players reach 1,800 career points, but only four have done it in the past 10 seasons. Kyle Weems of Missouri State became the 26th member of the 1,800 career-point club when he reached 1,800 in MSU's win against Bradley on Sunday, Feb. 12. The reigning MVC Larry Bird Player of the Year, Weems is the active career leader in the MVC in scoring, three-pointers, and rebounds, and no other player in the nation is the active leader in his conference in those three statistical categories. Including Weems, only 13 players in league history have scored 1,800 career points with 800 career rebounds. He's the first in that group to make 200 treys.
MVC vs. the Top 50
Last year, the MVC compiled a 5-33 record against the RPI Top 50 during the regular season. This year (thru Feb. 12), the MVC has already compiled 13 top-50 victories (Creighton and UNI each have 3)
